It’s the beginning of February and you know what that means right? Not long until Valentine’s Day.
No, come on… I hear all those moans and groans from you, the whole ‘it’s another excuse for card shops to make money’ or the ‘you should show love all year round’ and, if you’re single it’s the whole ‘great, look at all of these couples while I’m single – not fair!”
But did you know St Valentine’s falls on the 14th February to replace the Roman pagan festival of Lupercalia that was a celebration of fertility on February 15th?
So why do we celebrate Valentine’s Day?
When the Romans were led by Claudius II, he believed that young men made better soldiers if they were single. To protect and build a strong army, he prohibited them from getting married. Valentine disagreed with this and secretly performed marriage ceremonies because he believed in love not war (he sounds a bit like a hippie from the sixties). He was eventually found out by the Romans and was sentenced to death.
Now what does this have to do with art and fashion? Love is a theme quite often celebrated or examined in the world of art and fashion. Whether it’s ancient Greek or modern contemporary art – it’s out there.
Then there are the how to dress guides, the what not to wear and the how to impress the opposite sex articles popping up everywhere in the media. Put simply Valentine’s Day and love sells. It inspires people from poetry to sculpture to fashion. If you’re a bit stuck for ideas on what to wear, have a look at some of the outfits we’ve found. Look at how snappy the men look too. I personally love the outfit Pharell is wearing. There’s a saying that real men wear pink – what do you think? As for some of the gowns and other female outfits take in the amazing shades of red and pink. The dramatic and bold use of colour and style. Do you have a favourite look you’ve seen online or a favourite outfit of yours? Share them in the comments section below, we’d love to see them.
Oh and if, like myself, you’re spending Valentine’s alone, don’t fret. Snuggle up in your favourite PJs, with a good drink, chocolate, your favourite pet and enjoy Netflix for the night. After all, loving yourself is just as important as loving others.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
